We’ve got our hands on the original BMW M2, the BMW M2 Competition, the BMW M2 CS and the New BMW M2 to see which is the quarter-mile king! Not only that, we’ve got our hands on the car that inspired them all - the BMW 1M Coupe! So let’s see how they stack up. Starting with the 1M Coupe, it’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can produce 340hp and 500Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, and the car weighs in at 1,495kg. Next up we have the original BMW M2. It’s powered by a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six, and it can put down 370hp and 500Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,520kg. Then we have the BMW M2 Competition. With a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, it can put down 410hp and 550Nm, and power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s the heaviest car in the first race, weighing 1,575kg. Then we have the cars for the second race. Starting with the BMW M2 CS, it’s housing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, and it can put down 450hp and 550Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox, and it comes in lighter than the M2 Comp, at 1,550kg. Then finally we have the newest BMW M2. It’s got a (you guessed it…) 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, and it’s the most powerful car here, putting down 460hp and 550Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s a whole lot heavier than the other cars, weighing in at 1,725kg. So will the new M2 beat them all? This is the all-new BMW M2! Mat’s headed over to America to get his hands on this all-new sports coupe, and he’s about to find out if it’s a worthy successor to the previous M2, and whether it can compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayman or even the M3! Well when it comes to the design, it’s had a serious overhaul over the regular 2 Series. It’s got a large squared kidney grille up front, bulging wheel arches over the side, a carbon fibre roof and quad tailpipes at the back. All-in-all, it’s certainly meaner and more aggressive than the regular 2 Series. It’s a similar story on the inside, with several changes made over the standard car. As you’d expect there’s a smattering of M tricolour to be found throughout, a fair bit of carbon fibre, and M-specific digital dial graphics. It also comes with sport bucket seats. Then let’s take a look under the bonnet! It comes with the same 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six as found in the M3, but the output has been dialled down slightly, so it’ll produce 460hp and 550Nm of torque. This power is delivered to the rear wheels only, and unlike the M3, you can pick the M2 up as either a manual or an automatic! The price starts from around £65,000, but is it really worth it? The new BMW G87 M2 has finally arrived, and it promises to be a fantastic car with its powerful 458-horsepower S58 engine and massive 285mm rear tires. However, car enthusiasts are worried about its weight. In comparison to the previous generation M2 and M4 Coupe, the weight difference was minimal with the M4 Competition weighing 3565 pounds with a manual transmission and the M2 weighing 3450 pounds. The M4 had optional carbon-ceramic brakes that saved around 40 pounds, lighter optional CS-spec wheels, a lightweight driveshaft, and a standard carbon-fiber reinforced plastic roof, which the M2 Competition never received. In comparison to the current G82 M4, the G87 M2 has a leveled playing field, as the G87 experiences almost none of the downsides that its predecessor did, and the M4 loses some of its tricks like the driveshaft. The G82 M4 weighs 3830 pounds with a manual transmission and can increase with bigger wheels, but it can save 30 pounds with optional carbon-ceramic brakes and another 21 pounds with optional carbon bucket seats. The G87 M2 weighs 3814 pounds with a manual transmission, 16 pounds less than the G82 M4. A carbon roof is not standard on the M2 and can save around 13 pounds, and the same carbon chairs are available to save 24 pounds. Carbon ceramic brakes have not been confirmed as an option for the M2, but if they are available, it will save a significant amount of weight compared to the standard brakes.
